What I’m Giving Away:

1. Buckaroo Organics | Soapberry Suds Organic Laundry Detergent (2 Load Sample)

  • This year I finally switched over my household items to cruelty-free/natural alternatives. In place of my Tide Pods, I started using Soapberry based laundry detergents. Included in this giveaway is a sample size of Buckaroo Organics’s Soapberry Suds. This is a powder form of detergent made with only 4 ingredients, one being 100%  Certified Organic Soapberries. The soapberry not only cleans your fabrics but also naturally softens them. I still can’t believe how well this detergent works! It feels good knowing I’ve eliminated countless chemicals from my home and the environment. Soapberry Suds | smelltheroses.com

2. Acure Organics | Brightening Facial Scrub = $4

  • This is the best natural facial scrub I have come across. I use it bi-weekly to gently exfoliate my face without drying out my skin. After using, I am left with a more even skin tone and baby soft skin. Best part? It’s 100% cruelty-free and vegan.acure scrub | smelltheroses.com

3. 100% Pure | Bright Eyes Mask = $7

  • I am in love with these little eye masks from 100% Pure! I put them under my eyes in the morning after washing my face and leave them on for as long as possible. They are infused with caffeine to depuff and brighten your under-eye area while also providing intense hydration from organic aloe water. These are a great addition to your morning routine and truly make a HUGE difference! Since they are a little on the pricey side, I only use them on the mornings when I really need to depuff my under-eyes (i.e. after a late night working in the ER or after watching the Notebook 😂).

100 Percent Pure Bright Eyes Mask | smelltheroses.com

4. Beauty by Earth | Muscle Relief Bath Bomb = $8

  • If you read my bubble bath post, you may remember these bath bombs from Beauty by Earth. Unlike other popular bath bombs, these are 100% natural and made without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a chemical used for foaming), artificial dyes, colorants, or synthetic fragrance (all found in the Lush Bath Bombs 😕). Each of their bath bombs are designed to fulfill a different need. This giveaway features their “Muscle Relief” Bath Bomb! Beauty by Earth Bath Bomb | smelltheroses.com

5. S.W. Basics | Rosewater Spray 1.8oz = $13

  • If you can’t already tell from the name of my blog, I love roses. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but they have become a staple in many people’s beauty routines. This Rose Water from S.W. Basics is made from pure, steam-distilled rose water with no other additives or ingredients. I spray it all over my face and neck after washing to serve as a toner and gentle moisturizer. It is also great to spray on before applying makeup, as a setting spray for your makeup, or to simply keep in your purse to freshen up when on the go. S.W. Gasics Rose Spray | smelltheroses.com

6. Little Words Project | Peace & Love Bracelet = $28

  • If you have been following my blog all year, you know what a huge fan I am of Little Words Project. Their bracelets feature inspirational words surrounded by a strand of Swarovski crystals. Each bracelet comes with a unique numbered tag so you can register it on their website/app (so cool). You wear the little word for as long as you need and then pass it on to someone else who could use a little inspiration. Talk about a beautiful concept 🙂

Little Words Project | smelltheroses.com

7. Lauren B Beauty Blushing Bridesmaids 7-Free Nail Polish = $18

  • This is the prettiest light pink nail polish I have ever come across so I knew I had to include it in this giveaway. This color is just one of Lauren B Beauty‘s gorgeous colors from their new Bridal Collection. All of their polishes are cruelty-free and made without 7 of the most dangerous chemicals still lingering in most popular nail polish brands (i.e. Toulene, Formaldehyde, Dibutyl Palate (DBP), Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, TPHP, & Xylene… yuck). I have an entire post on this brand coming soon so keep an eye out!Lauren B Beauty 7-free Nail Polish | smelltheroses.com

8. David’s | Premium Natural Toothpaste = $8

  • I have been using this toothpaste for over a year and it is definitely my favorite! I love it because it naturally whitens and removes plaque without destroying your enamel. Its formula is of fluoride-free, sulfate-free, and made without artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, & preservatives. Plus, it’s cruelty-free and American made! David's Toothpaste | smelltheroses.com

9. Carefull Candles | Smell the Roses 100% Soy Wax Candle (3oz) = $3

  • You may remember this brand from my Fall Scented Candle Giveaway last October. Until last year, I never put much thought into what my favorite candles from stores like Yankee Candle and Bath & Body Works had in them. Unfortunately, when burned these candles release toxic fumes into the air which are harmful when inhaled. Luckily, brands like Carefull Candles make amazing smelling candles using 100% Soy Wax and essential oils. This candle was inspired by this very blog so I had to include it in this giveaway!Carefull Candles | smelltheroses.com

10. 100% Pure | Fruit Pigmented Ultra Lengthening Mascara (Black Tea) = $26

  • This was one of the first cruelty-free, non-toxic mascaras I ever tried and it has since been a favorite of mine. The pigment comes from actual black tea rather than harmful chemical-filled dyes so it’s perfect for anyone with skin/eye sensitivities. Its natural ingredients actually condition your lashes instead of drying them out and making them susceptible to breakage. As with all of 100% Pure‘s products, this mascara is 100% natural and cruelty-free!100 Percent Pure Black Tea Mascara | smelltheroses.com

I hope you are as excited about this giveaway as I am! Let me know what your favorite product is in the comments section below. I’d also love to hear which of my blog posts over the last year was your favorite or what kind of posts you’d like to see this year. As always, if you have any questions you can email me through my contact page.

This giveaway ends August 31st at 11:59 pm! Good Luck!

(ALMOST 4,000 ENTRIES INCLUDING INSTAGRAM — THIS WAS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL GIVEAWAY TO DATE!)

When I first switched to cruelty-free/natural beauty, I spent SO much time researching brands and trying to find replacements for my conventional products. At the time, my mother was receiving the Ipsy Glam Bag and I remember wishing there was a similar subscription service that only included cruelty-free/natural products. I did some research and, to my surprise, I found SEVERAL subscription services that fulfilled my wish.

One of the subscription services I decided to try was the Petit Vour Monthly Beauty Box! Each month I received 4 personalized beauty products ranging from sample to full size for only $15/month (shipping included). This subscription introduced me to brands I would have never found on my own and to several of my favorite products that I still use today.

Since this subscription service was so helpful to me, I figured what better giveaway for the first month of 2017 than a subscription to Petit Vour!?

ABOUT PETIT VOUR:

Since 2013, Petit Vour has served as a “luxury vegan destination” to women by offering cruelty-free beauty products, skin care, and accessories. Their monthly subscription box has become popular as a mechanism to introduce women to ethically responsible vegan brands. Any products featured in their boxes or sold in their online store are 100% vegan, cruelty-free, and made without “the dirty thirty“.

What does “petit vour” mean?

Petit Vour is a Frenglish word made by combining the French term “petit four” (meaning a small bite-sized confectionery) and the English word “vegan”. Therefore, “petit vour” means a small vegan luxury (in reference to the types of items included in their subscription boxes).

Who should subscribe to their monthly Beauty Box?

I believe their subscription box is best for anyone interested in learning more about the vegan beauty market. This may include, but is not limited to, people switching from conventional to cruelty-free beauty.

What kind of products do you receive each month in their Beauty Box?

Each box contains 4-5 vegan & cruelty-free beauty products, ranging from sample to full-size. Typically, you’ll receive 1 color item, 1 hair care item or fragrance, 1 skincare item, and 1 body care item. Each box is valued at around $35-40.

Learn more about Petit Vour’s monthly beauty box at PetitVour.com or check them out on Instagram!

Be sure to get all your entries in by January 26th at 11:59 pm! Good Luck!

Original Beauty Box Giveaway

Original Beauty Box Giveaway

This month, I have teamed up with the Original Beauty Box to give away their standard Original Beauty Box. This company specializes in premium high-quality makeup organization products. Besides their acrylic makeup boxes, they also carry a spinning lipstick tower, eyeshadow palette holder, lipgloss holder, brush holder, brush drying-tree, lighted vanity mirror, brush set, and accessories!

Code “SMELLTHEROSES20” saves you 20% off your entire online order!

What You Will Win:

Your very own, brand new, Original Beauty Box Acrylic Makeup Organizer (valued at $119)!!

Original Beauty Box Giveaway via smelltheroses.com

Features:

  • 100% crystal clear acrylic (no yellow tint or fogginess!)
  • Smooth sliding drawers
  • 4 drawers
    • Narrow 1″ tall top drawer – ideal for lip/eye products
    • (2) 2.25″ tall middle drawers with removable dividers
    • 3.25″ bottom drawer with removable divider
  • Overall Dimensions: 10” L x 7” W x 9.5” H

Why it’s Better than Other Acrylic Organizers:

I purchased a couple other acrylic organizers before finally buying my Original Beauty Box (OBB). The alternatives were less expensive and it showed in their quality. Both of the ones I purchased came with cracks and I found their acrylic was easily scratched. The drawers also did not slide smoothly and often got stuck. I was also disappointed that if I wanted to divide the drawers it was either not available or an added cost.

Last year, I decided to treat myself and buy the Original Beauty Box after reading tons of great reviews and watching countless YouTube reviews. I am proud to say I believe the hype and feel this is the best acrylic makeup organizer out there! Because I love mine so much, I knew I had to reach out to the company and see if they would do a giveaway with Smell the Roses!

Smell the Roses + Original Beauty Box Giveaway

My personal Original Beauty Box filled with only 100% cruelty-free and natural products!

Smell the Roses + Original Beauty Box Giveaway

The Big Makeup vs No Makeup Debate

makeup debate

I can’t wrap my head around our culture’s obsession with who is and who isn’t wearing makeup.

I woke up this morning and saw an article posted about an actress who went makeup-free on the latest cover of a major magazine. At first, I was excited to see another celebrity taking off the Hollywood “mask” of perfection and showing they are just as flawed as me and you. However, after seeing the picture I became disappointed. As much as I believe we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others, I couldn’t help but notice the cover photo didn’t look like the bare-faced selfies I have on my phone. It also didn’t look like the untouched paparazzi photos I have seen of this celebrity when she is makeup-free.

A professional photographer, perfect lighting, and possible retouching took away the photos credibility and positive message. I feel bad saying this because I know the actress had good intentions behind the shoot. She was probably excited to promote for her fans to be comfortable in their own skin. I also bet she had little, if not no, control over what the magazine did with her photo after it was taken.

Makeup-Free Celebrities

Personally, I have a lot of respect for a celebrity who is comfortable going all natural. They live their lives on a pedestal, balancing between seeming perfect and remaining true to themselves. Reactions to bare-faced celebrities span from people applauding their natural beauty & courage to show their flaws, to people intensely criticizing their natural look or its credibility. I don’t care who you are, no one enjoys being attacked, especially about how they look.

I believe each celebrity has her own motive for posting a makeup-free picture. While some celebrities may do it in vain, others may be trying to spread a positive message. Either way, what shouldn’t be a big deal becomes a controversial subject.

As with all controversial articles I read, I like to skim the readers’ comments. For this particular article, while some applauded the star’s natural look, it was no surprise the most liked comment said: “she may not be wearing makeup but I’m sure there was plenty of Photoshop”. I have to admit, I thought the same thing. As a nurse I meet dozens of new people on a daily basis and yet I have never met a single person with a perfect complexion. Even with their access to the best skincare and beauty procedures out there celebrities’s photos still get retouched. I think that speaks volumes about the non-existence of perfect skin.

Besides photo-retouching, it has been revealed many of the celebrities claiming to be “makeup-free” actually have some makeup on. I know first hand how far a little tinted moisturizer or concealer can go before it looks like I have a drop of makeup on.

Reality of a Makeup-Free Face

A real make-up free face has at the very least some discoloration or visible pores. Most also have dark circles, hyperpigmentation, broken capillaries, scars, pimples, dark spots, sun damage, and/or other random bumps I don’t know a name for. Our skin is our only form of protection against the brutal outside world and its elements. Being our body’s largest organ, it is extremely sensitive to our diets and the countless chemicals it comes into contact with on a daily basis. For us to expect it to look even and flawless is illogical.

We All Have Our Own Preferences

My Instagram feed consists of a wide range of beauty tastes. I follow mostly natural beauty brands so they advertise both full face and bare face makeup looks (to show you natural products can keep up with all the beauty trends). I also follow girls who are extremely gifted and apply full face makeup as well as the professionals. And then there are others who wear none at all. If you had to ask me what I think looks best, I wouldn’t be able to give you an answer. Everyone has different skin and motives for wearing makeup so who I am to judge a person’s personal beauty choices?

The focus nowadays is to not compare yourself to others, to love your natural self, and to accept your flaws but that is easier said than done. Honestly, that is a lifelong challenge that some conquer sooner than others. I would love to wake up tomorrow and live a life where my physical appearance didn’t cross my mind; I can’t even fathom how much happier I would be. But I know I’m not at that point yet. Until then, I will continue to wear makeup or not wear makeup whenever I want to.

It’s Your Choice

Maybe you wear makeup because…Watch Full Movie Online Streaming Online and Download

  • you love how you look with it on
  • you enjoy experimenting with different products
  • it’s fun to apply
  • there are physical features you would like to cover up
  • you feel more confident with it on
  • only for special occasions

Maybe you don’t wear makeup because…

  • you don’t think you need it
  • you don’t focus on your physical appearance
  • it makes your skin break out
  • you can’t afford it
  • you don’t know how to apply it
  • if men don’t you shouldn’t have to
  • your culture doesn’t allow you to

Whatever your reason, it is your choice. There are no rules governing beauty although our society may make it seem like there are.

If you genuinely feel beautiful then you are clearly doing the right thing for yourself.

At the end of the day ignore what people expect you to be. If you feel better wearing a full face of makeup, do it. If you feel better wearing no makeup at all, do it. We are given a finite amount of time on this planet; let’s stop wasting time worrying and just do what will make us happy in the meantime. I can personally say I find a person most beautiful when they are happy. If you are lucky enough to be happy with how you look, embrace it!

What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments!

… And remember, you are beautiful <3

Intro to Cruelty-Free Products: Everything You Need to Know

cruelty-free

I assume you have heard about the concept of animal testing. Before I started my journey to an animal-friendly lifestyle, I never put much thought into what was being tested on animals and what methods were being used. I didn’t even know products could be certified as cruelty-free!

While doing research on vegetarianism, I came across articles and graphic videos uncovering the horrific reality that these animals face. In order to test new chemicals, household products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and ingredients (for human use), animals are severely mistreated. According to the Humane Society International, they are subject to confined living spaces, physical restraint, forced inhalation, food/water deprivation, forced feeding, loneliness, and pain. Animals often die as a result of testing. Although this sounds like abuse, animal abuse laws do not apply to laboratory animals. Most commonly, mice, rats, bunnies, guinea pigs, hamsters, chimpanzees, cats, and dogs are used for testing. I look at my two dogs laying beside me and cringe imagining them in place of these animals.

I believe if I do not want it done to my pet, it should not be done to any animal.

UGLINESS OF THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY

The cosmetic industry alone is responsible for animal testing on approximately 100,000 – 200,000 animals per year. The Humane Society International states these animals include “rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, and mice. Dogs and monkeys are never used to test cosmetics anywhere in the world” (but they are used in other industries).

There is no law in the United States requiring companies to test on animals yet they still do. Thousands of ingredients are deemed safe for human use but companies continue to animal test to develop NEW ingredients. This means forcing ingredients down animal throats to test effects of ingestion or dripping the ingredient into their eyes/on their skin to test for irritation. These tests are often repeated for months on end. You can imagine the side effects.

Since the ethics of animal testing have only recently been questioned, not enough alternatives have been discovered to replace every method of animal testing. Strides are being made where some scientists are reducing the number of animal test subjects, creating better living conditions, and using any of the roughly 40 validated non-animal alternatives. With increased awareness, we will one day have no reason to conduct animal testing.

So what can you do about animal testing in the meantime? Stop buying products tested on animals and shop “Cruelty-Free”!

What does it mean if a product is “Cruelty-Free”?

  • Don’t conduct/allow animal testing at any stage of product development
  • The product’s ingredient suppliers do not test on animals (this is where the majority of animal testing takes place)
  • Only use newly discovered ingredients when human safety was confirmed without animal testing
  • Don’t sell cosmetic products in countries requiring animal testing (ex. any product physically sold in China is mandated to be tested on animals)

How can you tell what products are “Cruelty-Free”?

This is a little more complicated than you think. The FDA does not regulate companies claims regarding animal testing. That means a company may claim to be cruelty-free but not be! It is always best to do your own research (more on that below). However, organizations like the Leaping Bunny and PETA are making efforts towards regulating these claims.

1. THE LEAPING BUNNY

lb_fb-profile-white_512-03

The Leaping Bunny (pictured left) is the “gold standard” in cruelty-free. It was created by eight national animal protection groups (including the Humane Society of the United States). Its requirements for certification are the most strict and include independent audits and yearly renewal. These audits include “on-site” inspections of each company’s manufacturing facilities. The symbol is also the only cruelty-free symbol recognized internationally. In my opinion, you can trust a company is truly cruelty-free if certified by the Leaping Bunny 🙂 Read their FAQ for more info.

  • Click here to search the Leaping Bunny’s database or download their app for your smartphone (highly recommend)!

2. PETA

PETA’s “Beauty without Bunnies” logo is anotherNew-BWB-Logos-295x300Old-BWB-Logo-300x188 cruelty-free symbol commonly seen. Their requirements for certification are not as strict or closely regulated as the Leaping Bunny. For a company to use PETA’s symbol, they sign a written agreement stating they and their ingredient suppliers do not currently test on animals and will not in the future. In other words, this symbol is reliant on a company’s good word. PETA makes the argument that if a company showcasing their logo is discovered to test on animals, they lose all their credibility. I believe PETA’s symbol is a good starting point but to be 100% certain it is best to do some more research.

  • Click here to search PETA’s database or download their app.

FYI: A few of your favorite products may be cruelty-free and you don’t even know it (that was the case for me)! I recommend first investigating the products you already own/love by looking for cruelty-free claims on their packaging. You can either stop there or take it a step further and reach out to these companies. It will save you a lot of time/money having to find replacements 🙂

3. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH

To truly know a company is 100% cruelty-free it is best to contact them yourself. Some companies go into great detail what their policies on animal testing are in their FAQ so check there first.

What to ask:

  1. Do you animal-test your products or ingredients at any stage of production (from prototype to the final version)?
  2. Do your ingredient suppliers test on animals? How do you verify this?
  3. Do you commission any third parties to tests your products or ingredients on animals?
  4. Do you sell your products to countries like China that require animal testing?
  5. Are you owned by a larger company that tests on animals? (Loreal, Johnson & Johnson, etc.)

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, this company is not cruelty-free.

Where can you buy “Cruelty-Free” products?

They are not as hard to find as you may think. Where to buy obviously depends on the brand and where it is sold. I find many products on amazon and Target. There are also numerous drug-store brands that are cruelty-free!

Side Note: When I switched over to cruelty-free I also switched to using all-natural products. Many cruelty-free products are also natural. Be on the lookout for my post “Intro to Natural Products” in the near future.

Thank you for reading! I hope you found this post helpful.

Please contact me if you have any questions or leave them in the comments section below. Already made the switch? I’d love to hear about it 🙂

5. It’s a 10 | Miracle Leave-in Plus Keratin (2 fl oz) = $12

  • This tiny bottle is pricey but worth every penny. Spray in your hair after you shower and your knots will detangle with little effort. The keratin-infused formula helps strengthen hair while preventing breakage and frizz. I know numerous people who use this product and say it drastically improved their hair’s quality. I HIGHLY recommend it! (FYI: it’s not as clean of a formula as the rest of my beauty routine but it is cruelty-free)

In my opinion, Orgain is the best vegan protein product on the market. This is the only protein powder I will drink. I drink a shake once a day so it has become a staple of my plant-based diet.
