Erin’s Faces Rosewater Tonic Review

Rosewater Tonic | Erin's Faces |

Hello everyone! If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed I attended Indie Beauty Expo¬†NYC in late August. While there, I had the pleasure of meeting some of the people behind my favorite beauty brands including Erin from Erin’s Faces (yes, Erin herself)! She recently launched a new product that, for obvious reasons (ūüĆĻ), I could not resist buying! That product was their new Rosewater Tonic.

Rosewater has become a staple in my daily beauty regimen. There are few things as refreshing as spraying cool rosewater on your face and smelling its beautiful natural scent. The use of rosewater even dates back to ancient Egypt when Cleopatra, known for her beauty, was said to have used rosewater on both her face and body. It is one of the most versatile products I own and has done wonders for my skin.

You can read all about the benefits of rosewater and other hydrosols in my previous post, “Everything You Need to Know About Hydrosols“. I guarantee you’ll be looking to buy some for yourself after you read about all their benefits and uses!

Disclaimer: This post is in no way sponsored and I have not been asked to write it by Erin’s Faces. I purchased this product at the show because I genuinely¬†wanted to try it out.¬†ūüė䬆There are no affiliate links in this post.¬†

Erin’s Faces Rosewater Tonic

Why I Love It

High Quality Ingredients – I’m picky when it comes to my hydrosols. This rosewater tonic has become one of my favorites due to its simple and high quality ingredients. When Erin made this product, she put a lot of time and effort into picking the perfect rosewater supplier to ensure it was the highest quality!

Natural Scent – This rosewater has the most beautiful yet subtle rose scent naturally occurring from the roses used to distill it. That means there is no need for added fragrances.

Effectiveness – I’ve been using this product since I bought it a few months ago and have zero complaints about it! It does exactly what I want it to and makes my skin feel beautiful.

Ingredient Breakdown

Rosa Damascena (Rose) Hydrosol Water – self explanatory, this is the actual rosewater; the rosewater they use is steam-distilled and not diluted with water!

Linatural – a broad-spectrum preservative naturally derived from corn that is paraben free; used in this product to prevent growth of mold/bacteria (any product containing water MUST contain a preservative for this reason)

You will notice there are no synthetic fragrances added to their rosewater which is one of the reasons I love it! Not all rosewater products are the same so it’s important to find a quality product like this one.

CertificationsPETA Cruelty-free Certified & Vegan |

Cruelty-free Certified –¬†As with all of Erin’s Faces products, this product is 100% cruelty-free meaning at no point is it tested on animals.

Vegan –¬†This product contains no animal derived ingredients making it vegan friendly!

How to Use Rosewater Tonic

  1. Apply all over face/neck after cleansing and drying your skin to help your moisturizers and oils absorb better. Products absorb into the skin more effectively when applied to damp skin.
  2. Set your makeup by spraying rosewater on your face after application. If you have oily skin, this will help prevent oil build-up throughout the day or if you have dry skin, it will help moisturize your skin! Reapply throughout the day as a refresher or to restore moisture (perfect during the winter months).
  3. Apply to a cotton pad to gently remove makeup at the end of the day.
  4. Puffy eyes? Soak a cotton pad with chilled rosewater and apply to your eyes to reduce redness and decrease puffiness.

A Video from Erin Herself!

As always, thank you for reading! Let me know if you try this product and what you think of it. xoxo Caitlyn |

What I’m Giving Away:

1. Buckaroo Organics | Soapberry Suds Organic Laundry Detergent (2 Load Sample)

  • This year I finally switched over my household items to cruelty-free/natural alternatives. In place of my Tide Pods, I started using Soapberry based laundry detergents. Included in this giveaway is a sample size of Buckaroo Organics’s Soapberry Suds. This is a powder form of detergent made with only 4 ingredients, one being 100% ¬†Certified Organic Soapberries. The soapberry not only cleans your fabrics but also naturally softens them. I still can’t believe how well this detergent works! It feels good knowing I’ve eliminated countless chemicals from my home and the environment.¬†Soapberry Suds |

2. Acure Organics | Brightening Facial Scrub = $4

  • This is the best natural facial scrub I have come across. I use it bi-weekly to gently exfoliate my face without drying out my skin. After using, I am left with a more even skin tone and baby soft skin. Best part? It‚Äôs 100% cruelty-free¬†and vegan.acure scrub |

3. 100% Pure | Bright Eyes Mask = $7

  • I am in love with these little eye masks from 100% Pure! I put them under my eyes in the morning after washing my face and leave them on for as long as possible. They are infused with caffeine to depuff and brighten your under-eye area while also providing intense hydration from organic aloe water. These are a great addition to your morning routine and truly make a HUGE difference! Since they are a little on the pricey side, I only use them on the mornings when I really need to depuff my under-eyes (i.e. after a late night working¬†in the ER or after watching the Notebook¬†ūüėā).

100 Percent Pure Bright Eyes Mask |

4. Beauty by Earth | Muscle Relief Bath Bomb = $8

  • If you read my bubble bath post, you may remember these bath bombs from Beauty by Earth. Unlike other popular bath bombs, these are 100% natural and made without¬†Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a¬†chemical used for foaming), artificial¬†dyes, colorants, or synthetic fragrance (all found in the Lush Bath Bombs¬†ūüėē). Each of their bath bombs are designed to fulfill a different need. This giveaway features their “Muscle Relief” Bath Bomb!¬†Beauty by Earth Bath Bomb |

5. S.W. Basics | Rosewater Spray 1.8oz = $13

  • If you can’t already tell from the name of my blog, I love roses. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but they have become a staple in many people’s beauty routines. This Rose Water from S.W. Basics is made from pure, steam-distilled rose water with no other additives or ingredients. I spray it all over my face and neck after washing to serve as a toner and gentle moisturizer. It is also great to spray on before applying makeup, as a setting spray for your makeup, or to simply keep in your purse to freshen up when on the go.¬†S.W. Gasics Rose Spray |

6. Little Words Project | Peace & Love Bracelet = $28

  • If you have been following my blog all year, you know what a huge fan I am of Little Words Project. Their bracelets feature inspirational words surrounded by a strand¬†of Swarovski crystals. Each bracelet comes with a unique numbered tag so you can register it on their website/app (so cool). You wear the little word for as long as you need and then pass it on to someone else who could use a little inspiration. Talk about a beautiful concept¬†ūüôā

Little Words Project |

7. Lauren B Beauty | Blushing Bridesmaids 7-Free Nail Polish = $18

  • This is the prettiest light pink nail polish I have ever come across so I knew I had to include it in this giveaway. This color is just one of Lauren B Beauty‘s gorgeous colors from their new Bridal Collection. All of their polishes are cruelty-free and made without 7 of the most dangerous chemicals still lingering in most popular nail polish brands (i.e. Toulene, Formaldehyde, Dibutyl Palate (DBP), Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, TPHP, & Xylene… yuck). I have an entire post on this brand coming soon so keep an eye out!Lauren B Beauty 7-free Nail Polish |

8. David’s | Premium Natural Toothpaste = $8

  • I have been using this toothpaste for over a year and it is definitely my favorite! I love it because it naturally whitens and removes plaque without destroying your enamel. Its formula is of fluoride-free, sulfate-free, and made without artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, & preservatives. Plus, it’s cruelty-free and American made!¬†David's Toothpaste |

9. Carefull Candles | Smell the Roses 100% Soy Wax Candle (3oz) = $3

  • You may remember this brand from my Fall Scented Candle Giveaway last October. Until last year, I never put much thought into what my favorite candles from stores like Yankee Candle and Bath & Body Works had in them. Unfortunately, when burned these candles release toxic fumes into the air which are harmful when inhaled. Luckily, brands like Carefull Candles make amazing smelling candles using 100% Soy Wax and essential oils. This candle was inspired by this very blog so I had to include it in this giveaway!Carefull Candles |

10. 100% Pure | Fruit Pigmented Ultra Lengthening Mascara (Black Tea) = $26

  • This was one of the first cruelty-free, non-toxic mascaras I ever tried and it has since been a favorite of mine. The pigment comes from actual black tea rather than harmful chemical-filled dyes so it’s perfect for anyone with skin/eye sensitivities. Its natural ingredients actually condition your lashes instead of drying them out and making them susceptible to breakage. As with all of 100% Pure‘s products, this mascara is 100% natural and cruelty-free!100 Percent Pure Black Tea Mascara |

I hope you are as excited about this giveaway as I am! Let me know what your favorite product is in the comments section below. I’d also love to hear which of my blog posts over the last year was your favorite or what kind of posts you’d like to see this year. As always, if you have any questions you can email me through my contact page.

This giveaway ends August 31st at 11:59 pm! Good Luck!

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas: 2017 Cruelty-free Edition!

Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Hello, everyone! April is almost over which means we’re already¬†less than a month away from Mother’s Day! (Is it just me, or did this month fly by?!) If you are like me and have yet to pick up a gift, I figured I’d throw together a post on some Mother’s Day gift ideas that I’m considering for my own mama! I’ve included gifts for every price range and, as always, all items are cruelty-free! Happy shopping!

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas: 2017

1. Swarovski¬†Crystal “Mom” Bracelet | Little Words Project

Little Words Project | Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Shop: “Mom” Swarvorksi Crystal Bracelet

Other Styles:¬†LWP Mother’s Day Collection

If you’ve been following along for a while, you know I’m a huge fan of Little Words Project. Their bracelets make the perfect little gift and they recently launched their Mother’s Day Collection! Their beaded bracelets feature a “little” word surrounded by a strand¬†of Sworvorski crystals. Each bracelet comes with a unique numbered tag so you can register it on their website (so cool). Your mom will wear her little word for as long as she pleases and then, when the time is right, pass it on to someone else (maybe her mom or a mommy-to-be).¬†How cute!?

*Please note, the leather band versions are made of genuine animal leather so I recommend sticking to the crystal beaded bracelets!*

2. Lotus (Mother) Crystal Bouquet | Little Box of Rocks

Little of Box of Rocks | Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Shop: Lotus Collection

This adorable wooden box from Little Box of Rocks is one of my favorite products on this list. The Lotus Collection is designed for mothers making it the perfect Mother’s Day gift. It comes with 4 powerful crystals: Desert Rose¬†(believed to quiet worries and promote mental clarity), Moonstone (aka “the stone of motherhood”;¬†believed to be a powerful healing gem for women, balancing hormones, relieving stress, and bringing deep spiritual insights), Rose Quartz¬†(aka the stone of love; symbol of the bond between mother and child), and¬†Clear Quartz¬†(believed to amplify the power of other stones or be programmed with your desired intention). In addition, it comes wrapped in a black satin ribbon and addressed with a personalized letter! This collection makes such a meaningful and beautiful gift.

3. Premium Vegan Leather “Cher” Tote | Angela Roi

Angela Roi Cher Tote Light Gray | Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Shop: Light Gray Tote

Other Colors: Black | Creme

I use to love buying my mom designer bags for Mother’s Day or her birthday. However, when I switched to a cruelty-free lifestyle, I ditched buying anything made from genuine leather or suede! Luckily, there are several designer brands that sell all vegan leather products (learn more about vegan leather here) that are just as beautiful as the real stuff. I’ve had my eye on this tote by Angela Roi for a while now. I love the light gray color for spring but the black is SO stunning. It’s a little on the pricey side but its craftsmanship makes it worth every penny.

4. Organic Bath Bomb Gift Set | Beauty by Earth

Beauty by Earth Bath Bombs | Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Shop: 6-pack | 2-pack | Single

*Code “SMELLTHEROSES” saves you 15% off your entire order from!*

I wrote about these bath bombs in my bath essentials post and knew I had to include them in this gift guide (my mother actually stole one of them from my pack). Unlike the bath bombs you find in Lush or Bath & Body Works, these are made of 100% natural & mostly organic ingredients! That means, no synthetic fragrances/dyes and no animal-testing! Even better, each bath bomb is designed to fulfill a different need (sore muscles, joint relief, relaxation, etc). How cute would this gift box be paired with a new loofa and bottle of wine?!

5. Paper Flower Bouquet | The Lovely Ave

Paper Flower Bouquet | Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Shop: Lavender Bundle

Other Styles: Tropical | Peony

Flowers are a popular choice on Mother’s Day but, unfortunately, most die after a week or so (and make a mess in the process). These hand-made¬†German and Italian Crepe Paper flowers are a beautiful alternative that will last forever! The Lovely Ave¬†designed 3 bouquets for Mother’s Day and they are all equally gorgeous and comes in small (5 blooms), medium (9 blooms), and large (15 blooms – pictured) sizes! Although they may seem a bit pricey, they are worth the investment. I own one of their small size bouquets and am still in awe that the flowers aren’t real. They are the prettiest addition to your desk or entry table and I know your mom will love them!

6. Vegan Leather Toiletry Bag | Matt & Nat

The Face Oil | Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Shop: Quartz Toiletry Bag

Other Colors: Black | Cerise | Chili | Glass | Olive

Another great vegan leather brand is Matt & Nat. I actually bought this toiletry bag for my fiance in the Chili color and he loves it! When I saw it in this Quartz color, I fell in love. I included this toiletry bag on my Mother’s Day list because it would be so cute to buy and fill with cruelty-free beauty products for your mom! My mom is slowly trading her conventional beauty products for cruelty-free options, so this Mother’s Day I plan to buy her this bag and fill it with a few of the products she has yet to replace. I love the idea of a gift that is not only thoughtful but will be well used!

7. Every Day I’m Hustlin’ Travel Mug | Ashley Brooke Designs

Every Day I'm Hustlin' Travel Mug | Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Shop: Everyday I’m Hustlin’ Travel Mug

Other Styles: Lips | Palm Leaf | Now Watch Me Sip

If anyone needs this travel mug it is definitely our mamas! Who hustles more than them?! This travel mug is a new product from one of my favorite brands, Ashley Brooke Designs. It holds 16 ounces of liquid and is insulated so it will keep your beverage hot or cold. It is BPA-free, phthalate-free, lead-free and dishwasher safe. The lettering was hand-drawn by Ashley herself and is shiny metallic gold (so pretty)! It comes with the cutest hot pink heart-shaped and gold-lettered gift tag so wrapping is totally optional. Pair this with a bag of coffee or tea and it makes the perfect inexpensive gift!

8. Vegan Leather Sunglasses Case | Matt & Nat

Sunglasses Case - Matt & Nat | Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Shop: Quartz Sunglasses Case

Other Colors: Black | Cerise | Chili | Glass | Olive

How cute is this sunglasses case from Matt & Nat? My mother has a slight sunglasses obsession so when I saw this I immediately thought of her. Just like all of their products, this case is made of 100% vegan leather and comes in a variety of colors. Gift it with a new pair of sunglasses or on its own, either way, it makes a great gift!

9. Non-toxic “Gypsy” Candle | Prim Botanicals

Gypsy Candle - Prim Botanicals | Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Shop: Gypsy Candle

*Click here for a 20% off coupon to!*

This candle from Prim Botanicals may be my new favorite! It is made from 100% American-grown Soy Wax that is grown without the use of pesticides and herbicides. It is scented with clean fragrance oils and uses a pure cotton wick so you can burn your candle without worrying about inhaling toxic fumes! Not only does this make a great gift because of its beautiful scent, but its packing is also gorgeous! It even comes with an adorable box of matches!

10. The Face Oil | Prim Botanicals

The Face Oil | Mother's Day Gift Ideas |

Shop: Face Oil

Other Faves: Hair Oil | Hey Now Lip | Potion No 2

*Click here for a 20% off coupon to!*

This is hands down my all time favorite facial product and currently the only one I use. I recommend it to all of my friends and family since it is suitable for all skin types, even sensitive and oily skin! Rich in omega fatty acids, it helps fight signs of aging while reducing inflammation and preventing blemishes. It is light enough that it won’t clog your pores but rich enough that it will nourish and moisturize your skin. I use it daily and it leaves my skin looking glowy and fresh! I know my mom is going to love this product as much as I do!

I hope this post helped you find some inspiration for your Mother’s Day gifts! Thank you for reading!

Beauty by Earth Sunscreen Review |

If you have been following my blog, you know I love Beauty by Earth. They are¬†passionate about creating products that are not only safe for you and your family but also effective. They leave out all of the chemicals and harmful ingredients found in conventional products and use only the best natural, non-GMO, and organic ingredients! On top of that, all of their products are proudly made in the USA and cruelty-free.¬†ūüĆŅ

Beauty by Earth Suncare |

Beauty by Earth’s Sunscreen

While looking¬†for a green sunscreen option, I came across rave reviews for Beauty by Earth’s Sunscreen. Already a fan of their products, I immediately ordered their Sunscreen Bundle¬†and packed it for my vacation.¬†Here’s why I fell in love with it…

Broad Spectrum Protection

As covered in my sun safety post, one of the most important factors to consider when purchasing sunscreen is whether or not it provides broad-spectrum coverage. Both the Beauty by Earth SPF 25 Sunscreen and SPF 20 Facial Sunscreen are labeled broad-spectrum!

Reef Safe & Biodegradable Formula

Since they do not use synthetic ingredients like oxybenzone, their sunscreens are deemed reef-safe! Feel free to wear these products in the ocean without stress or guilt.¬†ūüź†

Cruelty-free Formulation

As with all of their products, Beauty by Earth’s sunscreen is certified cruelty-free by the Leaping Bunny Program.¬†ūüźį

Immediate Protection

Although it is recommended you apply your sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure, one of the benefits of Beauty by Earth’s sunscreens being formulated with Zinc Oxide is that they work immediately. While chemical sunscreens need time to be absorbed by the skin, physical sunscreens¬†work like a shield to the sun’s rays.

Environmental Working Group Recommended

What I consider one of the best sources for product safety, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has included Beauty by Earth on its list of “Best Beach and Sport Sunscreens”. Both products scored a squeaky clean 1 on their scale! Read their reports here:¬†SPF 20 Facial Sunscreen¬†|¬†SPF 25 Sunscreen¬†

SPF 25 Sunscreen (Body) | Beauty by Earth

Beauty by Earth Sunscreen SPF 25 |

Active Ingredient: Zinc Oxide (Non-nano)

Inactive Ingredients: Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Organic Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Vegetable Glycerin, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Organic Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Organic Calendula Officinalis (Calendula) Flower Extract, Organic Vanilla Planifolia (Vanilla) Fruit Extract, Organic Camellia Oleifera (Japanese Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract, Magnesium Sulfate, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Pulp Extract, Vanilla Tahitensis (Vanilla) Fruit Extract

This sunscreen is the best Zinc Oxide-based sunscreen I have found so far. The formula is definitely going to seem thick to someone who is used to conventional sunscreens but that is normal for Zinc Oxide-based sunscreens (I’ll take a thicker formula that is clean over a thinner chemical filled formula any day). Still, I do find the sunscreen fairly easy to rub in. It can leave a very subtle white tint on the body but I found this only happens when my legs are very dry. When I was on vacation, there was no whiteness if I had moisturized that morning. However, I actually liked when it was slightly visible because it showed me if I missed a spot or needed to reapply!

How to Use: Apply a liberal amount to all exposed areas of the body. Rub in until sunscreen is no longer or barely visible.  Reapply every 2 hours or after prolonged time in the water.

Why I Love It!

  1. Rubs in easily compared to other Zinc Oxide sunscreens.
  2. Doesn’t leave you looking like a ghost.¬†ūüĎĽ
  3. Effective immediately!
  4. Water resistant up to 40 minutes.
  5. Provides excellent sun protection!
  6. Mostly organic ingredients.
  7. Gentle enough for kids!
  8. Reef safe ūüź† ¬†& cruelty-free¬†ūüźį

Active Ingredient: Zinc Oxide (Non-nano)

Inactive Ingredients: Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Vegetable Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil, Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Organic Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract, Magnesium Sulfate, Ascorbyl Glucoside (Vitamin C), Xanthan Gum, Organic Argania Spinosa Kernel (Argan) Oil, Organic Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Organic Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Cupressus Sempervirens (Cypress) Leaf Essential Oil, Citrus Paradisi (Pink Grapefruit) Essential Oil

This facial sunscreen is light enough for everyday wear but strong enough for a full day at the beach.

Beach Day: I use one pump (about a pea size amount) and spread it all over my face until completely rubbed in. If I feel I need to add more, I do so only after the initial application has been rubbed in. Using this method prevented my face from turning “white” like we are all afraid of! Reapply every 2 hours while in direct sunlight.

Everyday Wear: Apply one pump to the entire face until completely rubbed in. Wait 5-10 minutes for sunscreen to dry. Apply makeup as usual and set with a finishing powder to prevent shine (I recommend the ‚ÄúUn‚ÄĚ Powder by RMS). *If exposed, apply to neck and chest too!

Why I Love It!

  1. Great for sensitive skin!
  2. Rubs in easily & feels lightweight.
  3. Doesn’t make my skin feel greasy.
  4. Leaves no white tint – perfect for under makeup.
  5. Effective immediately!
  6. Water resistant up to 40 minutes.
  7. Mostly organic ingredients.
  8. Pump dispenser prevents waste.
  9. Gentle enough for kids!
  10. Reef safe ūüź† ¬†& cruelty-free¬†ūüźį

Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Ascorbyl Glucoside (Vitamin C), Xanthan Gum, Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Sodium Citrate

For Burns or Sunburn: Apply a thin layer over burned area. The burn will immediately feel cooled and soothed (some people like to put the aloe vera in the fridge for additional relief). The aloe vera will keep the skin moisturized and help speed the healing process. Reapply 2-3 times a day until the burn has healed.

For Minor Cuts: Apply a thin layer 2-3 times a day. The gel will act as a natural disinfectant!

As a Moisturizer: Apply a thin layer to the area you would like to moisturize. The gel is nongreasy so it can be applied before makeup. It is also a great aftershave product Рsoftens skin and will heal tiny cuts!

As a Makeup Remover: Apply a small amount of gel to a cotton ball to gently remove makeup around your eyes and face.

For Hair: Treat dandruff and dry scalp by applying the gel to roots/scalp at nighttime. Wash hair normally in the AM. Some people also use the gel as a hair styling product!

Other Uses: diaper rash, acne treatment, eczema, bruises, poison ivy/oak, soothe bug bites, etc..

Why I Love It!

  1. Can be used for so much more than sunburn!
  2. Non-sticky, fast-drying formula.
  3. Love using on my legs/armpits after shaving.
  4. My fiance can use it as an aftershave too!

Staying Safe in the Sun: Nontoxic Sunscreen & Sunbathing Tips

Staying Safe in the Sun: Nontoxic Sunscreen & Sunbathing Tips |

Aloha, Smell the Roses readers! Spring is officially here and that means it’s time to start preparing for warmer weather! For some, that means wanting to slim down or¬†get organized. For me, it means making sure I have everything I need to keep my skin healthy and protected when outside in the hot sun. ‚ėÄÔłŹÔłŹ ¬†This post outlines my sunbathing tips and recommendations for nontoxic, cruelty-free, & natural sunscreen.

The Importance of Proper Sun Protection

Skin Cancer

It is common knowledge that excessive sun exposure expedites skin aging and increases your risk of skin cancer. In the United States, skin cancer is the most common cancer. Despite this knowledge, rates of melanoma are on the rise. As seen in the graphs below, rates are steadily increasing and highest in white men and women. Although these demographics are at highest risk, anyone of any race can develop skin cancer. (Source: CDC)

Melanoma Rates (CDC) -

Sources: CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries and National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program.

Melanoma Rates (CDC) -

You may have noticed incidence and death rates are higher in men. In 2013, almost twice as many American men died from melanoma as women. A suggested explanation comes from a survey that showed only 48% of men report routine sun avoidance, compared to 68% of women. (Source: EWG)

Skin Damage

Even if you do not develop skin cancer,¬†excess sun exposure will show in your appearance. What’s the worst part about it? The damage does not show up right away. It is a cumulative effect that develops over time and¬†is worsened by every incidence of sun exposure.

Pictured below is a side by side comparison of the same person photographed in both regular and UV lighting. Although UV images do not predict skin cancer, they still highlight the consequences of excess sun exposure (ex. wrinkles, sunspots, red blotches, texture, pore size, etc). By visualizing skin damage normally invisible to the naked eye, these photos raise awareness to the gradual and drastic damage caused by the sun. (Source: EWG)

Growing up, we were warned to not stare directly into the sun and for good reason. The sun is extremely damaging to the eyes and can cause cataracts, macular degeneration, and pterygium. To keep our eyes healthy and vision strong, the National Eye Institute recommends we wear sunglasses that block out 99 – 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation.¬†The addition of a wide brimmed hat is helpful too! Now you have an excuse to wear more accessories! ūüē∂ÔłŹ ¬†ūüĎí ¬†(Source: NEI)

Infants & Children

Infants (0-6 months) – Babies under six months of age should be kept out of direct sunlight because their skin does not contain enough melanin to protect them from the sun’s harmful rays. Their skin is also too sensitive for sunscreen. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that small amounts of sunscreen can be used on infants only as a last resort when shade cannot be found.

Toddlers & Children РProper steps should be taken to prevent sunburn. One blistering sunburn before the age of 18 can double a child’s risk of developing melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer. Broad spectrum sunscreens with an SPF 15+ are best to use in addition to shade and protective clothing. Avoid spray sunscreens due to the dangers associated with inhalation. (Source: Skin Cancer Foundation)

Buying & Using Sunscreen

Our skin is the largest organ of the body, and it absorbs nearly everything we put on it. Let that fact soak in for a minute. Although applying sunscreen seems like a health-conscious action, it all comes down to which one you are using. If you are not careful, I believe your sunscreen can be causing more harm than good (for both you and the environment)!

Ingredients To Avoid

Sunscreens can provide one of two forms of protection; chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens contain synthetic ingredients that are absorbed by the skin to block or reflect UV rays. These have the highest incidence of skin irritation and cellular toxicity and therefore should be avoided.

Try to avoid these harmful ingredients:

  • Oxybenzone | Sunscreen Agent –¬†UV light absorber
    • Hormone disruption (i.e. mimic or alter hormone levels)
    • Linked to reproductive and developmental issues
    • Endocrine disruption – associated with endometriosis in women
    • Known skin allergen
    • Accumulates in people – difficult to excrete
  • Octinoxate | Sunscreen Agent – UV light absorber
    • Hormone disruption (i.e. mimic or alter hormone levels)
    • Linked to reproductive and developmental issues
    • Endocrine disruption
    • Produces free radicles that contribute to premature skin aging and skin cancer
    • Accumulates in people – difficult to excrete (has been found in mothers’ breast milk)
    • Ecotoxicity
  • Vitamin A¬†(aka Retinol)¬†| Skin-conditioning Agent
    • Tumors and lesions develop sooner on skin coated with creams containing vitamin A when exposed to direct sunlight¬†(Source: EWG)
    • Produces free radicals that contribute to premature skin aging and skin cancer
    • Known human reproductive toxicant
  • Homosalate | Sunscreen Agent –¬†UV light absorber
    • Hormone disruption¬†(i.e. mimic or alter hormone levels)
    • Accumulates in people – difficult to excrete
    • Endocrine disruption
    • Ecotoxicity
  • Methylisothiazolinone¬†| Preservative – Paraben
    • Linked to serious allergic reactions (especially in children)¬†(Source: EWG)
    • Named Allergen of the Year in 2013 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society (Source: EWG)
    • Hormone disruptor
    • Linked to reproductive and developmental issues
    • Ecotoxicity
    • Neurotoxicity

Ingredients To Look For

Physical sunscreens are generally considered the safer form of sun protection. They are made from natural minerals which sit on top of the skin and are not readily absorbed into the bloodstream. Be aware, due to the nature of these ingredients, they do tend to have a white appearance on the skin (some brands are better than others – my recommendations are listed below).

Safe sunblocking ingredient to seek:

  • Zinc Oxide (non-nano)¬†| Sunblock Agent – Colorant
    • Offers moderate broad spectrum UV protection
    • Low skin penetration – low health risk in lotions

Other Factors to Consider

Broad Spectrum Coverage There are two types of UV light that can harm your skin ‚ÄĒ UVA and UVB. Too much exposure to either can cause skin cancer. A broad-spectrum, or full-spectrum, sunscreen protects your skin from both. Sunscreens will have this labeled on the bottle! (Source: Mayo Clinic)

SPF¬†Protection There is a misconception that higher SPF levels equal better sun protection. Unfortunately, SPF only applies to UVB rays (those responsible for burning) and does not take into consideration the harm associated with UVA rays (those responsible for age spots and wrinkling). For this reason, the Mayo Clinic recommends rather than focusing on a sunscreen’s SPF, choose one that is broad-spectrum. They state, even the worst burners will get adequate protection using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 when applied properly! (Read more about this topic: Mayo Clinic)

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 but no greater than 50!

Reef Safety

Over the years I have seen first hand the effects of sunscreen on our oceans. While vacationing on the tourist-dense¬†beaches of Waikiki, there were days you could see a film of sunscreen on the top of the ocean water. I couldn’t help but feel immense guilt as I watched little fish swimming through their chemical infested home. The pollution in our oceans from Oxybenzone has had toxic effects on our coral reefs and has contributed to coral bleaching.

Hanauma Bay Infographic - Reef Friendly Sun Protection |

Hanauma Bay Education Program | Hawaii Sea Grant

Pictured above, is an infographic from Oahu’s Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, a popular snorkeling spot known for its vast coral reef and diverse sea life. I found this posted when vacationing on my most recent trip and was so happy to see them making a stand against chemical sunscreens. I hope chemical sunscreens will eventually be banned but for now all we can do is try and educate the public on the importance of reef safe sunscreen.

Zinc Oxide has no known negative effects on our oceans and its inhabitants.

Application Types

Lotions | good for dry skin, best for application on large areas, can be messy

Stick | good for application on areas that require precision (i.e. around the eyes)

Spray | extremely dangerous if inhaled (apply in a well-ventilated area and be conscientious of those around you), easy to apply (especially on children), must apply a generous/even coating to ensure proper coverage and to tell where it was applied, great for quick reapplication after an initial coat of lotion

How To Apply

  1. Pick one you like because you’ll be more likely to use it.¬†If it’s hard to apply or messy, I doubt you will be reaching to reapply it as often as your should!
  2. Apply your sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure. Physical sunscreens are typically effective immediately where chemical sunscreens need time to be absorbed.
  3. Reapply at least every 2 hours and after swimming or excessive sweating.

Extra Sun Bathing Tips

  • The best sun protection is avoidance! Always have a beach umbrella or shaded area to retreat to during the hot hours. ‚õĪÔłŹ
  • Sunscreen should still be applied on a cloudy or overcast day! ‚ėĀÔłŹÔłŹ
  • The sun is strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. At these times, try to avoid direct sun exposure! (This is the perfect time to go grab lunch in the shade or indoors). To put it into perspective, the following exposures may result in the same amount of solar energy:
    • one hour at 9:00 a.m.
    • 15 minutes at 1:00 p.m.

Non-Toxic Sunscreen

How to Survive a Long Flight: Carry-On Essentials

Hello! This post outlines what I consider carry-on essentials for a long flight. After years of experience, I have learned it is just as important to pack for your flight as it is to pack for your vacation!

*Read the previous post in this series on “Choosing Your Seat”

carry-on essentials from

Helpful Hint: Pin the image above for future reference!

Tip #2: Carry-On Essentials

Know What You’re Allowed

We all know how strict airlines are with what you can and can’t carry-on a plane. Although the rules tend to be consistent amongst each airline, I always recommend you double-check¬†your airline’s carry-on policy before getting to the airport. This will prevent you from possibly being forced to check a bag you intended to carry-on.

Carry-On Policies

Since long flights tend to book-up, airlines follow their carry-on policies very closely on these flights. Most airlines allow you to bring one carry-on and one personal item in the cabin with you (but keep in mind, these rules are constantly changing).

  • Carry-On: A small size luggage that must be stored in the overhead compartment (small luggage, weekender bag..)
    • Approximate Dimensions:¬†9″¬†x 14″ x 22″ = 22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm (including handles and wheels)
  • Personal Item: Any item that can fit under the seat in front of you (purse, briefcase, backpack, laptop bag, diaper bag..)
  • Additional Items: Most airlines will allow you to bring other little items on board with you in addition to your carry-on/personal item, such as a pillow, blanket, umbrella, or jacket.

Picking the Perfect “Personal Item” Bag:

On a long flight, your personal item will be your survival kit (you may think I’m being funny, but I’m not)! It is best to store anything you will need access to during your flight in your personal item¬†since it will be stored under the seat in front of you. Therefore, I like a bag that is spacious yet compact enough that it doesn’t take away all of my leg room.

Here are some vegan bags I recommend:

What To Pack!

Now that you have the perfect bag picked out, let’s discuss what you should consider packing for the flight. It may seem like a lot, but you can pick and choose which are essentials for you during a long day of travel. (Side Note: all suggested items are made from non-animal materials or faux leather!)

Click here for a condensed PDF version of this carry-on packing list!

Travel Wallet &/or Passport Holder —¬†

Traveling is a good time to switch out your regular wallet for something a bit larger that can hold all your important travel documents (passport, tickets, hotel information, car rental, cash, credit cards, etc..). Organization is key! Plus, some wallets come with technology to prevent hackers from stealing your credit card information using RFID. Here are my picks:

Pillow & Blanket

The ones the airline provides are reused and it’s unclear what their sanitation process entails between flights (if there even is one). Since flights can get chilly¬†& if you tend to be cold, dress in layers and pack a light blanket. If you are a fan of neck pillows, try to find one that inflates or is compactable. Here are my picks:

Self-Care Items

Just because you are on a long flight does not mean your personal care routine goes out the window. Remember, you are going to be on a flight for the majority of your day! Side Note: If you are comfortable with it, I recommend going make-up free so you can easily care for your skin during your flight.

  • Facial Wipes:¬†Use these to freshen up mid-flight or prior to landing. Trust me, you’ll feel so much better with a clean face! Confession, I have even used these on my underarms¬†when my connecting flight got canceled and I was stuck in an airport for hourssss. #lifesaver — Here are my picks:

Clothing —

Here is my advice on dressing/packing clothes for a long flight:

  • Please wear socks!! You will most likely have to take your shoes off while going through security so make sure you are wearing socks with your shoes otherwise you are going to find yourself barefoot in the dirty airport.¬†ūüė£
  • Consider your footwear carefully… Make sure to wear shoes that are easy to remove and put back on quickly since you’ll have to do this at the security checkpoint. Also, keep in mind the climate of your final destination!
  • Dress in layers! Airplanes can feel warm/stuffy when you first get on but once you reach altitude the cabin quickly gets chilly. Save room in your bag by wearing a sweater/sweatshirt onto the plane (you can always take it off and use it as a pillow).
  • Pack or wear appropriate clothing for your destination!¬†A long flight often equates to a drastic change in climate. If you’re heading somewhere tropical, yoga pants and a pair of flip-flops in your carry-on will keep you comfortable upon arrival. Going somewhere cold? Have a jacket in your carry-on or easily accessible from your luggage.

Electronics —

Entertainment —

  • Many long-distance flights have seatback entertainments systems which are a life saver! However, if watching TV is not for you, make sure you have some other source of entertainment. Long flights are prime time to start that book you’ve been meaning to read! Here are some suggestions:
    • Books/magazines
    • Adult coloring book & colored pencils
    • Drawing pad

Food/Snacks —

  • It is always better to pack your own meals & snacks. However, there are certain types of foods you should stay away from on a long flight. I have an entire post on what-to-eat during long-distance flights coming soon (“How to Survive a Long Flight: Meals & Snacks”). Stay tuned!

Miscellaneous Items —

Did I miss anything? I hope not (if I did, let me know in the comments)! This list may seem like a lot to pack but I promise it will all fit in your personal item and be a life saver on your flight.

Thank you for reading!

Since 2013, Petit Vour has served as a “luxury vegan destination” to women by offering cruelty-free beauty products, skin care, and accessories. Their monthly subscription box has become popular as a mechanism to introduce women to ethically responsible vegan brands. Any products featured in their boxes or sold in their online store are 100% vegan, cruelty-free, and made without “the dirty thirty“.

What does “petit vour” mean?

Petit Vour is a Frenglish word made by combining the French term “petit four” (meaning a small bite-sized confectionery) and the English word “vegan”.¬†Therefore, “petit vour” means a small vegan luxury (in reference to the types of items included in their subscription boxes).

Who should subscribe to their monthly Beauty Box?

I believe their subscription box is best for anyone interested in learning more about the vegan beauty market. This may include, but is not limited to, people switching from conventional to cruelty-free beauty.

What kind of products do you receive each month in their Beauty Box?

Each box contains 4-5 vegan & cruelty-free beauty products, ranging from sample to full-size. Typically, you’ll receive 1 color item, 1 hair care item or fragrance, 1 skincare item, and 1 body care item. Each box is valued at around $35-40.

Learn more about Petit Vour’s monthly beauty box at or check them out on Instagram!

Be sure to get all your entries in by January 26th at 11:59 pm! Good Luck!

Schmidt’s: A Safe, Natural, & Vegan Alternative to Conventional Deodorant

Update: After using the Schmidt’s Rose Scented Deodorant Stick for several months, I started to develop itching and redness on one of my underarms. I am assuming this is a reaction to the product’s baking soda. I switched to their sensitive skin formula and saw some improvement.¬†Check out my current favorites page to see what I’m using now!

Ditching your conventional deodorant and switching to an all-natural brand is a horrifying thought for many. How can something that is all-natural work? And even if it does work, is it as good as the popular conventional options? In my experience, I have found these concerns to be justified for some all-natural deodorant brands.. but not all!  It all comes down to what brand you use. As with anything, some brands are better than others and what works well for one person may not work as well for the next.

After much trial and error, I have found a couple¬†of all-natural brands that I am confident work just as well as my old conventional deodorant! They are so good, I will never go back.. bye bye Dove & Secret! ‚úĆ

Schmidt's Product Review -

My favorite deodorant¬†and the one I am currently using¬†is from a company called¬†Schmidt‚Äôs Deodorant. Their mission is to ‚Äúchange the way you think about deodorant‚ÄĚ by setting new standards. Instead of mindlessly applying potentially dangerous chemicals to your skin, they want you to be aware of what your body is absorbing (yes, your deodorant doesn‚Äôt just sit on the outside of your skin ‚Äď anything you put on it goes into it). For this reason, their formulas are free of aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens, and phthalates ‚Äď all potentially hazardous chemicals found in most conventional deodorants.

If you’re wondering if their products work without these chemicals, my answer is YES. Their products provide the same level of odor protection as the conventional brands while also helping to keep your underarms dry.

In my experience, Schmidt’s deodorants have been extremely effective in preventing body odor all day. Schmidt’s has a variety of scents to appeal to all sorts of people. I have tried several and have found the odor protection to be the same for each.

Scent descriptions from Schmidt’s Online Store:

  • Rose + Vanilla:¬†A heavenly bouquet of rose with hints of sweet, powdery vanilla. Luxurious, elegant, and inviting.
  • Bergamot + Line: A bright citrus scent.
  • Lavender + Sage: The clean, herbaceous fragrance is tranquil and soothing.
  • Cedarwood + Juniper: A favorite among men and women alike. This provocative blend offers a warm, woody scent that is irresistible.
  • Ylang-Ylang + Calendula: An¬†elegant aroma that is sweet with delicate floral notes.
  • Fragrance-Free: A must-have for those seeking powerful deodorant protection and a luxurious experience without scent.

Conventional deodorants use a form of aluminum as an antiperspirant. Aluminum works by plugging your sweat glands to completely stop you from sweating. Schmidt‚Äôs formula contains natural plant-based powders intended to absorb the moisture when you sweat. Unlike aluminum, these powders do not completely stop you from sweating, but they can help¬†you remain dry! Remember, we are supposed to sweat ‚Äď whether it be temperature regulation or toxin removal, it is essential we allow our body to breathe!

Daily Protection: I work very active 12.5+ hour shifts and can confidently say Schmidt’s prevents odor all day. I do not feel I need to reapply deodorant at any point during the day. // Factors to consider: (1) I work in a temperature controlled environment; (2) I would not consider myself a naturally sweaty person.

Long-term:¬†At this point, I have been using Schmidt‚Äôs products for several months and my body has yet to ‚Äúget used to‚ÄĚ the formula. Some argue that, over time, deodorants stop working as well ‚ÄĒ¬†I have personally not found this to be true with Schmidt‚Äôs. If you find this is the case for you, I recommend trying a different one of their scents and seeing if that solves the problem.

All Schmidt’s Deodorant products are 100% cruelty-free & vegan. They are both Leaping Bunny and PETA approved!

When the Schmidt’s company was first created, they only had a jar product. Founder, Jaime Schmidt, formulated and packaged the original formula in her kitchen and sold her products at local farmers markets. Eventually, word spread and her famous jar formula became the leader in natural deodorant that it is today. Due to high demand, the company recently introduced a stick-form. I have used both and find odor/wetness protection is the same.

Schmidt's Product Review -

Schmidt’s has both jar and stick travel-size products in each of their scents.

Even though all Schmidt’s products are 100% natural, some people get reactions to products formulated with baking soda. Schmidt’s addresses this issue by offering a line of products intentionally designed for people with sensitive skin. These products do not contain baking soda and instead use magnesium to neutralize odor. The consistency of these products is also slightly smoother and creamier for a gentle application. As a bonus, these formulas include essential oils with soothing and anti-inflammatory qualities.

All You Need to Know About Vegan Leather

vegan leather

So what do you do if you want to live a cruelty-free lifestyle but like the aesthetics of leather? Luckily, as with most animal derived products, there is a vegan option. Below is everything you need to know about vegan leather!

What is Vegan Leather?

Vegan leather refers to any material that was designed to look like leather without the use of animal products. In most cases, these materials are a form of thermoplastic, meaning they can be shaped/molded as a liquid but keep their shape as a solid. Such characteristics allow them to be molded, dyed and manipulated to feel and look like genuine leather.

Differences in Types of Vegan Leather:

Over the years, many materials have been tested and used as forms of leather substitutes. Today, the most common versions of vegan leather are composed of either polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyurethane (PU). You may not realize it, but you already use these materials in one way or another. For instance:

  • polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
    • Third most common plastic in the world (aka ‚Äúvinyl‚ÄĚ)
    • Commonly used to make plumbing/pipes, window frames, IV tubing, credit cards, inflatable products, flooring, etc‚Ķ
  • polyurethane (PU)
    • The #1 most common¬†plastic in the world (you unavoidably come into contact with it daily!)
    • Commonly used to make plastic bags, plastic wrap, plastic¬†cartons, straws, bulletproof vests, toys, etc‚Ķ
    • Considered less harmful for the environment than PVC

Other materials not as commonly used are recycled nylon, cork, rubber, paper, kelp, cotton, cardboard, and tree bark!

Mimicking the texture, durability, and quality of genuine leather is not an easy task so there are differences in quality of vegan leather. Depending on the materials and methods used, the process can either be extremely cheap or extremely expensive. These factors are reflected in the final product:

  • ‚ÄúCheap‚ÄĚ Vegan Leather = can¬†have a strong plastic¬†smell, feel thin/flimsy, usually made from PVC, tend to be manufactured in sweat shops ūüôĀ
  • ‚ÄúHigh Quality‚ÄĚ Vegan Leather = hard to decipher from genuine leather, look and feel like the real thing, usually made from PU or other newer alternatives (i.e. nylon, cork, rubber, paper, kelp, cotton, cardboard, treebark, etc.), tend to be humanely manufactured

Advantages of Quality Vegan Leather:

A major advantage of vegan leather is that the¬†items end up being extremely durable and water resistant. I have owned a few of my¬†Matt & Nat vegan leather bags for several years and they look the same¬†as the day I got them! They are easy to clean (wipe with a damp wet cloth) and you do not have to worry about them getting ruined in the rain! ūüôā

Of course, the biggest advantage to vegan leather is that you get the aesthetics of real leather without the cost of an animal’s life.

Criticisms of Vegan Leather:

As functional as the materials PVC and PU may be, they do have their downsides. I’m sure you have heard of the negative environmental impact these and other plastics have since they are not naturally biodegradable and difficult to recycle. If untreated, these materials can remain in landfills for hundreds of years. Even worse, improperly disposed of PVC has been shown to leak toxins into landfills contaminating soil and water supplies.

Just because it’s vegan doesn’t automatically make it cruelty-free or ethical…

In this case, I am not applying the term ‚Äúcruelty-free‚ÄĚ to animals but instead to people. Yes, vegan leather does not harm animals but it can harm the humans who make it. During the manufacturing process, when thermoplastics are heated they release extremely toxic substances. If inhaled, these fumes can have serious health implications.

Because of the dangers of producing these plastics, they are often outsourced to factories overseas (most often China). While some factories are regularly inspected and audited to ensure safe working conditions, many slip under the radar. Without proper regulations, these workers are often overworked, underpaid, and forced to work in a dangerous environment.

We are ethically responsible to make an informed decision when purchasing products. I believe you should always ask yourself, who made this and where does it come from? This type of mindset will change the way you see the world and the products you buy.

How do I know if a vegan leather product was ethically made?

When looking to buy vegan leather, you have to do some research. Companies like Matt & Nat have strict guidelines in place for their factories and are passionate about their environmental footprint. For example, while the majority of Matt & Nat products are made from PU, they also utilize recycled materials in their line of products such as cork, nylon, and rubber. The majority of the linings in their handbags are made from recycled plastic bottles! They also require their factories be certified by the SA8000 standard, an auditable social certification for decent workplaces, and they perform random inspections to ensure these standards are a reality.

Ethically responsible companies will provide information about their manufacturing methods on their websites. If you still have questions, you can always send an email.

Some ethical vegan leather brands include: Matt & Nat | Angela Roi | Wills | Olsenhaus | Beyond Skin

If vegan leather is bad for the environment, shouldn’t we just stick to real leather?

To be honest, genuine leather is no better. You may not know, but animal leather has to go through a process known as ‚Äútanning‚ÄĚ. This is a process in which animal skins are treated with chemicals to prevent them¬†from breaking down and growing mold (after all, it is made of an animal that is supposed to decompose). These chemicals are highly carcinogenic to workers and tend to find their way into water sources.

Some eye-opening videos about the tanning process of animal-grade leather:

In addition, your leather products didn’t necessarily come from an animal someone ate. The leather and fur industry kill thousands of animals each year solely for the sake of fashion. This increases the livestock industry which is already responsible for over 50% of all greenhouse gas emission (I recommend watching Cowspiracy for more information).

What about the leather products you already own?

When switching to a cruelty-free lifestyle, you have to make some decisions regarding leather. Do you keep the leather items you already own or do you sell them/give them away? The answer to this question depends on what you’re comfortable with. I personally sold many of my leather items that were in good condition. Giving away your leather items means one less leather item will have to be purchased and maybe one more animal spared. I decided to keep one pair of leather boots that were already worn in. I figured I should get the most use out of them possible out of respect for the animal and replace them with a vegan option when the time comes.

Intro to Cruelty-Free Products: Everything You Need to Know

I assume you have heard about the concept of animal testing. Before I started my journey to an animal-friendly lifestyle, I never put much thought into what was being tested on animals and what methods were being used. I didn’t even know products could be certified as cruelty-free!

While doing research on vegetarianism, I came across articles and graphic videos uncovering the horrific reality that these animals face as a result of product development. In order to test new chemicals, household products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and ingredients (for human use), animals are often severely mistreated. According to the Humane Society International, they are subject to confined living spaces, physical restraint, forced inhalation, food/water deprivation, forced feeding, loneliness, and pain. Animals often die as a result of testing. Although this sounds like abuse, animal abuse laws do not apply to laboratory animals. Most commonly, mice, rats, bunnies, guinea pigs, hamsters, chimpanzees, cats, and dogs are used for testing. I look at my two dogs laying beside me and cringe imagining them in place of these animals.

I believe if I do not want it done to my pet, it should not be done to any animal.

The cosmetic industry alone is responsible for animal testing on approximately 100,000 ‚Äď 200,000 animals per year. The Humane Society International states¬†these animals include ‚Äúrabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, and mice. Dogs and monkeys are never used to test cosmetics anywhere in the world‚Ä̬†(but they are used in other industries).

There is no law in the United States requiring companies to test on animals yet they still do. Thousands of ingredients are deemed safe for human use but companies continue to animal test to develop NEW ingredients. This means forcing ingredients down animal throats to test effects of ingestion or dripping the ingredient into their eyes/on their skin to test for irritation. These tests are often repeated for months on end. You can imagine the side effects.

Since the ethics of animal testing have only recently been questioned, not enough alternatives have been discovered to replace every method of animal testing. Strides are being made where some scientists are reducing the number of animal test subjects, creating better living conditions, and using any of the roughly 40 validated non-animal alternatives. With increased awareness, we will one day have no reason to conduct animal testing.

So what can you do about animal testing in the meantime? Stop buying products tested on animals and shop¬†‚ÄúCruelty-Free‚ÄĚ!¬†

What does it mean if a product is ‚ÄúCruelty-Free‚ÄĚ?

  • Don‚Äôt conduct/allow¬†animal testing at any stage¬†of¬†product development
  • The product‚Äôs ingredient suppliers do not test on animals (this is where the majority of animal testing takes place)
  • Only use newly discovered ingredients when human safety was confirmed¬†without animal testing
  • Don‚Äôt sell cosmetic products in countries requiring animal testing (ex. any product physically sold in China is mandated¬†to be tested on animals)

How can you tell what products are ‚ÄúCruelty-Free‚ÄĚ?

This is a little more complicated than you think. The FDA does not regulate companies claims regarding animal testing. That means a company may claim to be cruelty-free but not be! It is always best to do your own research (more on that below). However, organizations like the Leaping Bunny and PETA are making efforts towards regulating these claims.

The Leaping Bunny¬†(pictured left) is the ‚Äúgold standard‚ÄĚ in cruelty-free. It was created¬†by eight national animal protection groups (including the¬†Humane Society of the United States).¬†Its requirements for certification are the most strict and include independent audits and yearly renewal. These audits include ‚Äúon-site‚ÄĚ inspections of each company‚Äôs manufacturing facilities. The symbol¬†is also the only cruelty-free symbol recognized internationally. In my opinion, you can trust a company is truly cruelty-free if certified by the Leaping Bunny ūüôā Read their FAQ for more info.

PETA‚Äôs ‚ÄúBeauty without Bunnies‚ÄĚ logo¬†is anotherNew-BWB-Logos-295x300Old-BWB-Logo-300x188¬†cruelty-free symbol commonly seen. Their requirements for certification are not as strict or closely regulated as the Leaping Bunny. For a company to use PETA‚Äôs symbol, they sign a written agreement stating they and their ingredient suppliers do not currently test on animals and will not in the future. In other words, this symbol is reliant on a company‚Äôs good word. PETA makes the argument that if a company showcasing their logo is discovered to test on animals, they lose all their credibility. I believe PETA‚Äôs symbol is a good starting point but to be 100% certain it is best to do some more research.

  • Click here to search PETA‚Äôs database or download their app.

FYI: A few of your favorite products may be cruelty-free and you don‚Äôt even know it (that was the case for me)! I recommend first investigating the products you already own/love by¬†looking for cruelty-free claims on their packaging. You can either stop there or take it a step further and reach out to these companies. It will save you a lot of time/money having to find replacements ūüôā

To truly know a company is 100% cruelty-free it is best to contact them yourself. Some companies go into great detail what their policies on animal testing are in their FAQ so check there first.

What to ask:

  1. Do you animal-test your products or ingredients at any stage of production (from prototype to the final version)?
  2. Do your ingredient suppliers test on animals? How do you verify this?
  3. Do you commission any third parties to tests your products or ingredients on animals?
  4. Do you sell your products to countries like China that require animal testing?
  5. Are you owned by a larger company that tests on animals? (Loreal, Johnson & Johnson, etc.)

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, this company is not cruelty-free.

Where can you buy ‚ÄúCruelty-Free‚ÄĚ products?

They are not as hard to find as you may think. Where to buy obviously depends on the brand and where it is sold. I find many products on amazon and Target. There are also numerous drug-store brands that are cruelty-free!

Side Note: When I switched over to cruelty-free I also switched to using all-natural products. Many cruelty-free products are also natural. Be on the lookout for my post ‚ÄúIntro to Natural Products‚ÄĚ in the near future.
